The Monroe County Conservative Party said it will back Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino for governor, voting 34-2 yesterday to back him over Donald Trump.
State Conservative Party chairman Mike Long said Monday that he will support Astorino, saying he believes Astorino will run and that Trump won’t.
Cook agreed, saying that he doesn’t believe Trump will enter the race.
Trump reiterated today that he wants the GOP unified for him if he runs.
Cook said two of his committee members wanted Trump; the rest sided with Astorino.
“Mr. Astorino shares our traditional Conservative American values. He is smart, tough, hardworking, charming, articulate and compassionate,” the part said in a statement.
Conservative Party support is important in New York. No Republican has won statewide office without it since 1974.
The Monroe County committee’s support puts it at odds with its Republican counterpart.
