The Shooters Committee on Political Education, a pro-gun rights group based in western New York, is planning a rally at the Capitol on April 1 to protest Gov. Andrew Cuomo.
The invitation on the group’s website said it plans to “pay Mr. Cuomo a visit. Are you ready to defend your place in New York, are you ready to defend your home?”
The group was among those last year that organized rallies at the Capitol to protest the state’s gun-control law passed in January 2013. Gun-rights groups have wanted a repeal of the so-called SAFE Act.
The rally comes as the state Rifle & Pistol Association’s president Thomas King told Gannett’s Albany Bureau earlier this month that it’s not planning rallies this year. Instead, the group is focused on trying beat back the law in court; the lawsuit is headed to federal appeals court.
SCOPE seized on comments Cuomo made last month that conservatives have no place in New York. Cuomo and his aides have said that he meant conservatives can’t win statewide in the heavily Democratic state.
“IT’S ON! Time to Muster for Albany!” the group’s invitation states. “The governor says we are unwelcome? The governor says there is no place for us in New York State? The governor says we are extremists. Now he has Chuck Schumer saying the government should persecute dissenting opinions too.”
