Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos said he believes Westchester County Executive Rob Astorino would be an “excellent candidate” and that Astorino will run for governor this year.
Skelos, R-Nassau County, said to reporters that he supports Astorino running and was not sure if Donald Trump, who has considered a run against Gov. Andrew Cuomo, is serious, Gannett’s Ashley Hupfl reports.
State Conservative Party chairman Mike Long said earlier today that he will support Astorino.
“I believe Mike Long also indicated he would be supportive of Rob Astorino,” Skelos said. “I have a lot of respect for Donald Trump, I don’t know whether he was totally serious about this. I know a number of people feel he is, but it’s a huge task to run statewide for governor. He has his TV shows, he has a lot of other things on his plate and I don’t know if he could devote the time.”
Skelos also said his working relationship with the governor has no impact on his support of a Republican candidate and that everyone is vulnerable in politics.
On Astorino, Skelos said, “I believe he will be the candidate.”
Astorino spoke last week to Senate Republicans in Albany.
