Mayors from across the state are in Albany today to push for an increase in state aid and funding for other initiatives.
The so-called “Tin Cup Brigade” comes the Monday after the governor releases his annual budget proposal. Mayors testify before a legislative committee.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo last Tuesday proposed to keep aid flat for municipalities at $715 million.
New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio is pressing Cuomo and the state Legislature to let the city raise income taxes on the rich to fund pre-kindergarten citywide. Cuomo has said the state would fund pre-kindergarten statewide, without increasing taxes.
“We’re simply asking Albany to allow New York City to tax itself – its wealthiest residents – those making a half-million or more a year,” de Blasio said in his testimony.
Those testifying include Buffalo Mayor Byron Brown; Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner; Yonkers Mayor Mike Spano; Albany Mayor Kathy Sheehan; Rochester Mayor Lovely Warren; and Dutchess County Executive Marcus Molinaro.
