Gov. Andrew Cuomo won’t be having the annual open house at the governor’s mansion on New Year’s Day. Instead, he is attending the inauguration of incoming New York City Mayor Bill de Blasio.
“But we will have it next year, and we had it last year,” and he joked, “and anytime anyone wants to visit, you can do that too.”
Cuomo is seeking re-election in November.
De Blasio worked for Cuomo when the governor headed HUD in Washington in the 1990s. There have been questions about how well de Blasio, a staunch liberal, will get along with Cuomo, who will seek tax cuts this year as he seek re-election.
But Cuomo and de Blasio, who wants to increase taxes on the rich, have downplayed any dissension.
President Clinton, one of Cuomo’s mentors, will swear in de Blasio using a bible once owned by President Franklin Delano Roosevelt. The bible is on loan from the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park, Dutchess County.
Hillary Clinton will also be there. She and Cuomo are potential 2016 presidential candidates.
