CNN’s Chris Cuomo yesterday defended his interview earlier in the day with his big brother, Gov. Andrew Cuomo, on the Metro-North train crash.
The younger Cuomo came under some criticism for interviewing the governor, with some saying he shouldn’t have to avoid any conflict of interest. Chris Cuomo hosts CNN’s morning show, “New Day.”
Chris Cuomo said the interview was simply to get at facts around the fatal crash in the Bronx that killed four passengers. He said he wouldn’t interview his brother on controversial topics, such as politics. It was one of several television interviews that Cuomo did yesterday.
“I knew there was no conflict here. There’s no question of conflict. Because he has a job to do, so do I, this was all fact based. And it’s something that didn’t involve him in terms of the accountability,” Chris Cuomo said.
He continued, “You see, that changes every. If there’s something that’s been wrong on the state level that he deserves to get hammered, he’s got to answer for it. I wouldn’t put myself in that position because it’s going to raise questions of conflict. If it was politics, I wouldn’t do it. This was matter of fact.”
Chris Cuomo said he’s spent a long time thinking about ways to stay impartial when it comes to his family and his role as a journalist. But he noted that he has a special connection to a powerful political leader.
And CNN host Brooke Baldwin said, “You had this unique relationship with Andrew Cuomo, which has helped us lead this story and have all this critical information, and we here at CNN are very grateful, right, for that relationship.”
Chris Cuomo responded, “There’s a lot here. One, reporting is all connections, right? One of my regrets would be that my brother didn’t give me any exclusive information that he didn’t give other people. That would have been nice, then all the criticism is well worthwhile.”
He added, “This is something that I’ve considered probably more than most, the sensitive of how to separate family from the profession of journalism, given my background, given my family, people who are I am very, very proud to be with. My family is everything to me.”
