In a 30-second video advertisement, the dean of New York’s congressional Republicans stares straight into the camera and makes a case for stricter gun regulation at the federal level, calling it the “one issue that should not be about politics.”
The congressman—Peter King of Nassau County—has called for federal gun-control legislation before, proposing a bill following the Gabby Giffords shooting and joining the call for universal background checks on gun sales.
So what makes the new ad noteworthy? It was paid for by the New York State Democratic Committee.
which appears on a production company’s Vimeo page—appears to be part of the state Democrats’ “New Yorkers for Gun Safety” campaign, which launched last week. The first TV spot, featuring former Reagan Press Secretary James Brady, went on the air Sunday.
UPDATED: After we posted this, IU Productions appeared to have removed all of the New Yorkers for Gun Safety ads from its Vimeo page, including the one featuring King. The transcript of the ad remains below.
In the ad, King, a Republican, touts the “bipartisan law that Governor (Andrew) Cuomo passed in New York,” a reference to the series of gun-control measures—including a broader ban on assault weapons—included in the much-debated SAFE Act, which passed in January.
“By standing up to extremists, (Cuomo) passed the toughest gun law in the country,” King says in the ad. “Now Washington needs to show the same courage and bipartisan leadership that Governor Cuomo did in New York, because our safety is too important for politics.”
It’s not clear if the advertisement has run on television yet, but it popped up online late Sunday. (It appears the production company may be making some final edits to it; It
has had uploaded several nearly identical versions of the same spot before removing them after this post went up.)
We’ve got calls into both King’s office and the state Democratic Party for comment.
Here’s the transcript of King’s comments in the ad:
“My father was a New York City cop and I’ve been a Republican my entire life, but if there’s one issue that should not be about politics, it’s common-sense gun regulation. Strong legislation is what’s needed for our country, our communities and our children—the kind of bi-partisan law that Governor Cuomo passed in New York. By standing up to extremists, he passed the toughest gun law in the country. Now Washington needs to show the same courage and bipartisan leadership that Governor Cuomo did in New York, because our safety is too important for politics.”
