Store owners near John’s Barber Shop in Mohawk, where two people were shot and killed Wednesday morning, said their community is in chaos.
“You feel sad for the families—the families have been waiting around here all day, families of the deceased,” said a man who said he owned Mohawk Village Market, near the barber shop. He would not give his name.
“It’s scary. You don’t expect it, and it’s just a scary situation,” the man continued.
Tom Noddings, 63, owner of Mohawk Valley Antiques, which is across the street, said community members are on edge, not sure whether the suspected shooter has been caught.
“It’s chaotic. There’s been a lot of tragedy and death,” Noddings said. “There are people all over the place, and there’s so much rumor going around about—he’s here, he’s there, he’s been there—it’s just crazy.”
Noddings said he didn’t know the suspect, Kurt Myers, 64, of Mohawk.
“Nobody’s ever heard of him. Nobody knows him,” Noddings said. “He’s probably one of those guys that nobody’s ever seen, but he has lived here a while.”
Noddings said he would close his store Wednesday.
“We’ve been shut down. It’s all a crime scene because the deceased are still in the barber shop, and they’ve got to take care of everything.
“You can’t even get through with the phone sometimes—there’s so much chatter. But everybody’s networking and telling people to shut down, lock down, stay home,” he continued.
