A Herkimer store owner just steps from where a shooting took place Wednesday morning said he heard shots coming from Gaffey’s Fast Lube next door.
Beasley said he did not know the suspected shooter, Kurt Myers, 64, of Mohawk. Four people were killed and two injured in the shooting, which took place at two locations in the area—the lube shop and a barber shop about a mile away.
“It’s amazing they haven’t caught them because we got half the police force of New York state right in our little village,” he continued.
He said shootings “almost never” happen in the village, “so it’s got the whole place up in arms.”
“As a matter of fact, my cell phone isn’t working very well,” he said. “The network is overloaded.”
Beasley said he plans to keep the store open today but doesn’t expect to have any customers.
“I’ve got a very large police presence here at the crime scene, but there’s no point, because the road is blocked off,” he said. “It’s all taped off, and there are like 12 police cars here.”
Other store owners in the area said they were instructed not to give comments to the media.
