Silver wants Lopez report released “as quickly as possible”

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver said he hopes there’s little delay in the release of what is expected to be a critical state report on Assemblyman Vito Lopez’s alleged grouping of young female aides.

[1]“I have not seen it. I don’t believe any of my staff has seen it. I do think it should be released as quickly as possible,” Silver told reporters today.

The Joint Commission on Public Ethics is believed to have sent its findings to the state Legislative Ethics Commission, but reports Wednesday indicated [2] that any action and the release of the report may be delayed while Staten Island District Attorney Dan Donovan completes a criminal investigation into Lopez’s actions.

Silver, D-Manhattan, who quietly approved a $103,000 settlement with Lopez’s accusers, said he would like to see the report made public sooner rather than later. The report is expected to be critical of Silver’s handling of the situation. Silver has apologized for how he handled the case, and he has called on Lopez to resign. [3]

Lopez, a Brooklyn Democrat, hasn’t resigned, although he hasn’t been in Albany much this year because of ongoing health problems. [4]

He said his office will continue to cooperate with Donovan’s investigation.

“We’ve cooperated in every way with investigations that have taken place and we’ll continue to cooperate,” Silver said. “I will not second guess what their reasons” are.
