Assemblyman Dov Hikind, D-Brooklyn, is dismissing criticism after he dressed up in blackface makeup as a basketball player for a Purim party yesterday.
“Yes, I wore a costume on Purim and hosted a party. Most of the people who attended also wore costumes,” Hikind, the 30-year Assembly veteran said on his blog. “Everywhere that Purim was being celebrated, people wore costumes. It was Purim. People dress up.”
Hikind is a leader among Orthodox Jews in the city. The New York Observer first reported about Hikind’s costume, which also included an Afro wig and sunglasses.
“I am intrigued that anyone who understands Purim — or for that matter understands me — would have a problem with this,” Hikind said on his blog . “This is political correctness to the absurd. There is not a prejudiced bone in my body.”
