Assemblyman Dov Hikind, D-Brooklyn, is dismissing criticism after he dressed up in blackface makeup as a basketball player for a Purim party yesterday.

[1]“Yes, I wore a costume on Purim and hosted a party. Most of the people who attended also wore costumes,” Hikind, the 30-year Assembly veteran said on his blog. “Everywhere that Purim was being celebrated, people wore costumes. It was Purim. People dress up.”

Hikind is a leader among Orthodox Jews in the city. The New York Observer first reported [2] about Hikind’s costume, which also included an Afro wig and sunglasses.

“I am intrigued that anyone who understands Purim — or for that matter understands me — would have a problem with this,” Hikind said on his blog [3]. “This is political correctness to the absurd. There is not a prejudiced bone in my body.”
