Pro-gun groups, opponents to rally today

Gun-rights groups and gun-control advocates are rallying at the state Capitol today after the state passed a strong gun law last month that puts added restrictions on gun sales and ownership.
Opponents of the gun law championed by Gov. Andrew Cuomo will rally outside at the Capitol starting at about 11 a.m. The group, Turn Albany Upside Down, is bringing busloads of gun owners to Albany to rail against the law, which Cuomo signed into law Jan. 15.
Former gubernatorial candidate Carl Paladino, a Buffalo business owner who ran against Cuomo in 2010, is set to speak at the rally, as are Republican state lawmakers.
The people’s right “to keep and bear arms is guaranteed as an individual right under the Second Amendment to the United States Constitution. The right of the people to keep and bear arms for defense of life, liberty, and property is regarded as an inalienable right by the people,” the group said in a statement.
The group, One Million Moms for Gun Control, will hold a rally at noon inside the Capitol in support of the new law.
The law puts tighter restrictions on gun sales, adds new reporting requirements on gun owners and limits the number of bullets in a magazine from 10 to seven.
Cuomo has defended the new law, saying it is not aimed at law-abiding gun owners and will make New York safer.
