Assemblyman Lalor Won’t Take Per Diems

Freshman Assemblyman Kieran Michael Lalor, R-Fishkill, Dutchess County, said he won’t put in for per diems when he’s in Albany, and he blasted abuse of the system.

[1]Assemblyman William Boyland, D-Brooklyn, was accused yesterday [2]by Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli of failing to document $67,497 in travel expenses between 2007 and 2012.

“In light of local news reports, it boggles the mind that a federal indictment for bribery of a downstate politician is what it takes to bring light to the abuse of per diems in the state Legislature,” Lalor said in a statement. “On average, members, who are not pointedly breaking the law and requesting per diems out of malfeasance, receive upward of $19,000 a year in reimbursements.”

A report by Gannett’s Albany Bureau in 2010 [3] found that there is no particular oversight of lawmakers’ travel reimbursements. They receive $165 a day for every day they are in Albany, plus expenses for mileage. The statewide average has been about $19,000 per lawmaker.

Lalor said he won’t take it.

“When I came to Albany, I promised voters that I would not take any food or lodging per diems or bloated leadership stipends. Politicians are living comfortably on the taxpayer dime when New Yorkers are struggling to make ends meet; to keep their business afloat, help their children get into college or putting a meal on the family table each night,” he said. “Per diems are not the only abuses of the taxpayer dollar in Albany. Legislators are part-time employees, yet they make nearly twice as much when in Albany than the state’s average family at home.”

Another Hudson Valley lawmaker also doesn’t take per diems. Assemblyman Frank Skartados, a Democrat, travels more than an hour each way from his Ulster County home to Albany.
