With its twists and turns, Bear Mountain Parkway to get safety improvements

The State Department of Transportation said today that it plans to make changes on the Bear Mountain Parkway in Westchester County to increase highway safety, Gannett’s Haley Viccaro reports.
Transportation Commissioner Joan McDonald said the department wants to reduce the chance of crossover crashes on the scenic, yet windy highway by installing median barriers and adding turning lanes.
“Safety is a top priority for NYSDOT and after hearing community concerns about the Bear Mountain Parkway, we are taking quick action to implement engineering solutions that will help slow traffic down, protect walkers and prevent dangerous crossover accidents,” McDonald said in a statement.
The proposed changes will include improvements on the parkway between Highland Avenue in Peekskill and Route 35/202 in Cortlandt. The centerline median barriers will be between Division Street and Locust Avenue.
A left turn lane and traffic signal will be installed at the intersection of Frost Lane and Carhart Avenue. There will also be crosswalks, pedestrian signals and a new sidewalk on Carhart Avenue.
Left turn lanes will be provided at Bear Mountain Lane, Locust Avenue, Brookside Avenue and Arlo Lane. For traffic climbing the hill eastbound from Division Street, an auxiliary lane will continue 1,200 feet past the intersection of Frost Lane and Carhart Avenue.
The project is expected to start this summer and completed by the spring in 2014. The Department of Transportation will hold two public meetings to discuss the improvement project.
On Feb. 27 there will be a meeting in the city of Peekskill from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m. with the location to be determined. The following day on Feb. 28, a meeting will be in the Cortlandt Town Hall on 1 Heady Street from 6:30 p.m. to 8 p.m.
