An owl keeps watchful eye at the Capitol

The Coalition of Living Museums brought live birds to the Capitol today to show how their participation with the Environmental Protection Fund is supporting the state’s economy and caring for living resources, Gannett’s Haley Viccaro reports.
“ZBGA helps fund care for the living resources that you find in nature, such as birds,” said Sean Mahar, spokesman for Audubon New York. “It really helps connect kids to nature, get more New Yorkers outdoors, and it also allows us to do a lot of environmental education work in schools.”
Mahar said the National Audubon Society’s mission is to protect birds and other wildlife through advocacy and education based on science. The society supports Gov. Cuomo’s budget proposal that focuses on investments for storm risk reduction and climate change adaptation.
The US Fish and Wildlife Service’s 2011 national survey reported that the total expenditures for wildlife watching activities in the state reached $4.2 billion. Audubon New York said in 2011 46.7 million people nationwide observe birds, which totals about $55 billion in spending.
Here’s an owl that was at the Legislative Office Building as lawmakers headed today to committee meetings and budget hearings.
