JCOPE’s mics go live during executive session: “The less said the better”

The state Joint Commission on Public Ethics has been knocked for spending most of its time behind closed doors in executive session.

[1]But today when it did so, someone forgot to shut off the live feed of the meeting over the Internet, leading to a few parts of the closed-door session to be broadcast for the world—mainly Albany media—to hear.

The snippets were brief, two of them in fact, before JCOPE members got wind of the mishap and shut off the mics.

“What’s the problem, John?” JCOPE chairwoman Janet DiFiore was heard saying, presumably to JCOPE spokesman John Milgrim before the mics went dead.

There was enough played to hear one member say, “I think this is a good lesson, if we want to recuse ourselves, we ought to recuse ourselves. If we are not going to recuse ourselves, the less said the better.”

To which DiFiore, the Westchester County District Attorney, could be heard responding, “Right. Point well taken. Or point taken, depending on your point of view.”

The Associated Press reported that the executive session apparently had to do with with JCOPE commissioner Ellen Yaroshefsky and whether to recuse herself from a case apparently connected to a top aide of Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan.

“Yaroshefsky described Silver’s aide as someone of “high ethical standards” and said she wouldn’t recuse herself from the case,” AP reported.

In another snippet, JCOPE members were heard discussing a potential investigation that they might pursue, but it was not clear what specifically they were discussing.
