Brady Campaign to NY Legislature: Thanks for Gun Law

The Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, a national organization lobbying for state and federal gun-control laws, wrote a letter to New York’s legislative leaders thanking them for the controversial law passed earlier this month.
The letter, dated Monday, is addressed to Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan; Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos, R-Nassau County; Independent Democratic Conference Leader Jeffrey Klein, D-Bronx; and Senate Democrats Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers.
It thanks the Legislature for its “bold action in passing the NY Safe Act,” as Gov. Andrew Cuomo dubbed the law. The first gun-control law in the nation since the Newtown, Conn., massacre, the law bans assault weapons, limits bullets in a magazine to seven and increases penalties for illegal gun use, among other provisions.
“This country stands at a crossroads between passing sensible life-saving gun measures, and continued deference to extremists and a powerful gun lobby,” Dan Gross, the campaigns president, wrote. “Those on the other side seek the paint this debate as a battle between intrusion and the preservation of liberty.
“Your leadership not only proved this argument to be a false choice, but also provided a balanced and comprehensive law for New York that can be a model for other states and the federal government,” Gross continued.
