Groups: “Will You Fund Our Schools?”

The Alliance for Quality Education, a labor-backed group, released a video to lobby for more school aid in the 2013-14 budget.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s proposed budget would increase state aid by 4.4 percent, or by $889 million, about a $300 increase per student.
The group said more funding is needed.
“Over the past three years, schools have cut 35,000 educators as a result of more than $2 billion in school aid cuts,” AQE said in a statement. “The 4 percent restoration to schools does not even keep up with the rising inflation of schools’ costs.”
Lawmakers will debate between now and April whether to increase school aid. Usually, the Legislature has added more school aid to a governor’s budget. But since Cuomo has taken office, lawmakers haven’t added more money—instead restoring some of his money set aside for competitive grants to the general aid formula.
