In a poll released Tuesday—the 40th anniversary of Roe v. Wade—NARAL Pro-Choice New York showed 74 percent of respondents supported the Supreme Court decision that legalized abortion.
The survey, which the abortion rights group performed just before the 2012 elections, included a cross-section of 1,000 likely voters. Pollster Greenberg Quinlan Rosner asked participants whether they supported “Roe v. Wade, the landmark Supreme Court decision that recognized the right to choose to have an abortion.”
Fifty-eight percent of respondents said they “strongly support” the decision; 55 percent of Republicans said they support it.
“Roe v. Wade changed the course of women’s lives for generations,” Andrea Miller, the group’s president, said in a statement. “Here in the Empire State, we have a proud tradition of advancing equality, dating back to the days of Seneca Falls. So it’s no wonder that New Yorkers have an enduring support for the rights and values articulated in Roe.”
Asked about a New York law that “would guarantee every woman in the state the right to choose or refuse contraception and the right to make decisions about pregnancy, including the right to have an abortion,” 76 percent of New Yorkers expressed support, with 60 percent doing so strongly.
A diverse group of New Yorkers would support the state law, including 63 percent of Catholics, 73 percent of suburban voters, 78 percent of Hispanics and 79 percent of African Americans, according to the poll.
The question refers to the Reproductive Health Act, which has failed in recent years but has emerged as a piece of Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s priority “Women’s Equality Act.”
“While politicians all across the country attempt to undermine access to reproductive health care and roll back women’s rights, we are proud to live in a state that embraces Roe’s promise that women can and should be equal in our society,” she said.
Church groups continue to reject the Reproductive Health Act and have criticized Cuomo’s support of the bill this session.
