Tkaczyk: “No One Believed Our Campaign Had a Chance” (Updated)

Even though Republicans drew the 46th Senate district specifically for George Amedore, he will go down in defeat after nearly 100 ballots were counted over the past two days.

[1]Democrat Cecilia Tkaczyk is the unofficial winner, defeating Amedore by 19 votes. Tkaczyk scored a big win today and on Election Day in Ulster County, allowing her to overcome Amedore lead in many of the district’s five counties.

Tkaczyk received an infusion of cash from Democratic groups in the final weeks of the campaign.

“It is an incredible privilege to have been selected by the people of the 46th District to serve as their state senator. No one believed our campaign had a chance in a district hand-carved by Republicans, and yet the power of good ideas and a strong campaign proved itself,” she said in a statement.

The victory gives Democrats 33 seats on paper and enough for a majority. But a five-member Independent Democratic Conference have formed a bi-partisan coalition with Republicans and Democrat Simcha Felder of Brooklyn is also sitting with the Republicans. So Democrats are still without the majority they lost in the 2010 elections.

Sen. Mike Gianaris said the state delivers a strong mandate for a Democratic and progressive Senate and people want a certain ideology in the government.

“Here we stand with 19 votes, which is insurmountable,” Gianaris said on Susan Arbetter’s Capitol Pressroom this morning. “So we finally, after a couple of long months, have concluded this process and have a new senator.”

Updated: Here’s Amedore’s statement.

“I want to thank the constituents that I’ve had the honor to serve, as  well as those who supported me in this campaign.  I am proud  of the honest and clean campaign that I and my team ran in this extended race. I was supported  by the hard-working upstate  families who are faced with tremendous challenges in these trying times. The time for politics has ended and the time to govern is at hand.

“As a small businessman born and raised in upstate New York, I understand the everyday issues.  I believe  our representatives need to act on behalf of those who call upstate their home.  As I’ve done throughout my life, I will continue to advocate for the people’s  needs and hope for a brighter future.”
