An upstate Republican senator has collected more than 31,000 signatures on a petition to repeal the state’s new gun control law, which Gov. Andrew Cuomo signed into law Tuesday.
Sen. Kathy Marchione, R-Saratoga, posted the petition on her website at 10:54 a.m. Tuesday, a spokesman said. As of 10:43 a.m. Wednesday, 31,345 people had signed the petition.
The signers asking for a repeal of the law, which implements a full assaults-weapons ban, limits magazines to seven bullets and strengthens penalties against illegal gun users, include New Yorkers and people from other states.
“Please sign my Legislative Petition to build public support for repealing and replacing the restrictive gun control measures,” she wrote. “If every New Yorker who supports the Second Amendment makes their voices heard we can forge a true public safety remedy that addresses real issues such as dangerous criminals and mental health without curtailing the Second Amendment.”
Also, a petition asking the White House to “rule” the state’s new gun-control law “unconstitutional” has been signed by 9,780 people, many of whom are New Yorkers.
The White House petition, written by a petitioner identified as “John M,” said Cuomo “has taken firearm regulations too far.
