Saying he’s “exploiting tragedy,” the National Rifle Association pushed back hard against Gov. Andrew Cuomo’s plan to reform the state’s gun laws, branding it as “assaults on your Second Amendment rights.”
In an alert posted on its lobbying website, the NRA’s Institute for Legislative Action said Cuomo “demonstrated his lack of understanding of the U.S. Constitution” in his State of the State on Wednesday.
“Please contact your state Senator and Assemblyman TODAY and respectfully ask him or her to oppose legislation that does nothing more than target law-abiding gun owners,” the NRA posted.
Cuomo’s gun agenda included a mix of specifics and broad language, including a push to make the “strongest assault weapons ban in the nation.” The state’s current ban includes “more holes than Swiss Cheese,” Cuomo has said.
“America’s Most-Anti-Gun Governor hails from the same state as the nation’s Most-Anti-Gun Mayor, New York City Michael Bloomberg,” according to the NRA post.

Everyone’s guns were taken in 30’s Germany
Ban assault weapon is the best thing that could happen in this country. I work as a arm security guard and do not agree that any body should carry or have any assault weapon, unless that person is a law enforcement officer while such person is performing his duty. assault weapon is a military weapon and should be used for war only.
Hi, rudi. I guess we should look for our constitutional scholarship from “arm security guards” like you. What you believe or think, even if is an overwhelmingly popular opinion, might just be plain wrong for several reasons. 1) Learn about your Constitution. It’s the rules we all agree to play under. If you don’t understand part of it, ask someone to help you. There are two recent Supreme Court decisions that you may not like, but they clearly bear on this issue. 2) Bring forward some neutral evidence (I’ll take the FBI’s accumulated statistics) that demonstrates that bans like this solve any real problem, and show me how they don’t increase the dangerous imbalance of power between the politicians and the electorate that they were supposed to be serving. Ridiculous grandstanding like this simply lets these same craven career politicians score political points with the overwhelming majority of under-informed voters.
Right-on rudi. Here’s to you…
