Silver Says New York Can Lead Nation On Gun Control

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, said New York can be a leader in the nation on gun control if it moves forward quickly with a new set of laws.
Gov. Andrew Cuomo later today is set to unveil a sweeping package of measures to tighten regulations on gun purchases and possession, including a tougher assault-weapons ban, additional registration requirements and limits on magazines.
Silver said lawmakers and Cuomo are “95 percent” there on an agreement.
“I am looking to see an assault-weapons ban and a limitation on the number of bullets that anybody can carry at any one time,” Silver said of waiting for Cuomo’s address at 1:30 p.m.
Silver said that added registrations for those who own guns, such as a five-year renewal, makes sense.
“I just think we ought to be updated on the information that we have on people who have that material,” Silver told reporters after a tour of the renovated Capitol with Cuomo.
Silver said there would be additional penalties against illegal guns in any agreement. He said he would like a deal soon, possibly as early as this week.
“I think it’s important to have it sooner rather than later. New York leads the nation in everything. It’s time for us to lead the nation in this,” Silver said.
Silver will name a majority leader later today. He wouldn’t reveal who it is, but Assemblyman Joseph Morelle, D-Irondequoit, Monroe County, is on the short list.
“You’ll find out later. I’ll announce it in chamber,” Silver said.
