Gov. Andrew Cuomo plans to announce today what he says would be the toughest assault-weapons ban in the country.
The measure would tighten New York’s already existing ban and eliminate large capacity magazines regardless of date of manufacturing. The ban only magazines after 1994.
“The time has come to make New York safer and once again lead the way for other states to follow,” Cuomo’s news release said.
The measures would also include private sales of guns would have to include a background check. There would be enhanced penalties for illegal guns and reporting by mental-health professionals about the risk of their patients owning a gun.
His proposals would also bolster background checks and registrations for gun holders.
