Gov. Andrew Cuomo and other Legislative leaders marked the completion of the two-year state Capitol restoration Wednesday with the unveiling of a stained-glass skylight above the Senate staircase.

[1]Repairs on the landmark structure, which had suffered neglect, were completed 18 months early and $2.3 million under budget, announced Mark Schaming, director of the state Museum.

“This building is not just a building,” Cuomo said Wednesday before revealing the new window. “And all the work that went in was not about completing an office structure. This is a symbol of public service. It is a symbol that says to people all across this state: ‘Your government is here, and your government is functioning. And you can trust your government.’”

The unveiling comes the morning of Cuomo’s third-annual State of the State address, in which he will lay out his agenda for the year. He is expected to focus on enacting tougher gun control laws and bolstering the state economy.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, D-Manhattan, as well as Senate Republican Leader Dean Skelos of Nassau County and Independent Democratic Conference Leader Jeffrey Klein, D-Bronx, attended the ceremony.

[2]“In 1899, it was Governor Teddy Roosevelt who dedicated this building for the first time,” Schaming said. “At the time, it was considered the most beautiful state Capitol in the nation and an architectural wonder.”

Schaming said the building has not just been restored but improved, as defects like a leaky roof have been repaired.

“The Capitol has not looked this good since it first opened,” Schaming said. “Teddy Roosevelt would be proud today.”
