In a blow to the Albany area, the New York Giants announced today that it will not hold its 2013 training camp at the University of Albany and instead will train at it facilities in New Jersey.

[1]The team has been at UAlbany for 16 of the past 17 years, only skipping out in 2011 during a lock-out shortened training camp.

“The University at Albany and the Capital Region have been great hosts for us during our training camps,” Giants president John Mara and vice president Steve Tisch said in a statement on the team’s website [2]. “UAlbany truly has been the summer home of the Giants. We are grateful to Mayor Jennings and to Dr. McElroy and his staff in the athletic department for making us feel welcome and providing the resources we needed to prepare for the season.”

The team didn’t rule out holding camp in Albany in the future. The Giants first trained in Albany in 1996.

“It has been a tremendous experience for our city to have the Giants here,” Mayor Jerry Jennings said the statement. “We value our relationship with John Mara and Steve Tisch and their organization, and I have told them they are always welcome. This is Giants country, and we wish them nothing but the best.”

The New York Jets have also made upstate New York their training camp home. They have been at SUNY Cortland in 2010 and 2012.
