State Education Commissioner John King wrote to schools Thursday asking for participation in a statewide moment-of-silence for the Connecticut school shooting victims.
King said in the email that the Education Department has been invited to join with Connecticut schools in a day of remembrance Friday, one week after a gunman opened fire at Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn. Suspect Adam Lanza, 20, allegedly killed 26 people at the school, including 20 children. He also killed his mother and himself.
The day of remembrance will begin with a moment of silence at 9:30 a.m., around the time when the massacre began.
Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy contacted every governor in the country, asking them to participate in a national moment of silence, according to the education department.
“This tragedy weighs heavy on our nation and even heavier in our classrooms,” King wrote in the email. “I hope you’ll encourage principals, teachers, staff and students to observe a moment of silence tomorrow at 9:30 a.m. to honor those lives lost at Sandy Hook Elementary School. Our thoughts and prayers continue to go out to all the families of Newtown, Connecticut.”
