Sen. Michael Gianaris, D-Queens, who recently led Democrats’ election efforts for the chamber, will serve as deputy minority leader.

[1]Sen. Andrea Stewart-Cousins, D-Yonkers, who was elected to lead the conference Monday, announced Thursday her pick for deputy.

“Senator Michael Gianaris is an incredible public servant, and I am pleased that he will serve as the Deputy Conference Leader for the Senate Democrats,” Stewart-Cousins said in a statement. “During the past election, Senator Gianaris led our conference to victories throughout New York State and helped ensure that Democratic Senators were elected despite daunting odds. I look forward to having Senator Gianaris as part of my leadership team.”

Gianaris was elected to represent the residents of Western Queens in the Assembly in 2000 and was elected to the Senate in 2010. While serving as deputy leader, he will remain chairman of the Democratic Senate Campaign Committee.

“I am honored to be chosen by Democratic Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins to serve as her Deputy,” Gianaris said in a statement. “There is much work to be done to advance the progressive goals the people of our state demand. I am excited to be a part of Senator Stewart-Cousins’ team and look forward to working in partnership with Governor Cuomo to achieve these goals.”

The conference plans to support passing “common sense” gun laws, raising the minimum wage, protecting women’s reproductive rights, boosting small buinesses and providing mandate relief for local governments, according to a news release.
