Gov. Andrew Cuomo today announced that the state will take part in a national moment of silence Friday at 9:30 a.m in remembrance of last week’s Connecticut school shooting.

[1]State Education Commissioner John King earlier Thursday asked New York schools to participate [2], in solidarity with Sandy Hook Elementary School in Newtown, Conn., where a gunman murdered 26 people last Friday, including 20 children. He also killed his mother and himself.

“Last Friday, 26 innocent lives were lost to a senseless and horrific act of violence,” Cuomo said in a statement. “One week later, we will honor those victims—many of whom were young children—with a moment of silence.

“Our thoughts and prayers are with the people of Newtown as we continue to mourn the loss of these precious lives. During this time of tragedy, I, along with all New Yorkers, stand together with Governor Malloy and the people of Connecticut to remember the victims and help bear the pain of their community.”

Cuomo received a letter from Connecticut Gov. Dannel Malloy this week asking New York to join Connecticut in honoring the victims.

Cuomo has requested that places of worship and government buildings ring bells 26 times in honor of the lives lost in the massacre.
