The 2012 class of National Board Certified Teachers was recognized on Monday as reaching the profession’s “gold standard,” Gannett’s Haley Viccaro reports.
The National Board for Professional Teaching Standards named 156 New York teachers as reaching the status of master teacher. They were honored for being the best in the state based on their work and commitment in their classrooms and communities.
“To achieve national certification, these teachers demonstrated they are among the very best in a state that can already boast it has the most highly educated, highly experienced and dedicated teachers in the nation,” said Richard Iannuzzi, president of the New York State United Teachers, a statewide union, in a statement.
The newly selected National Board Certified Teachers spent about 200 to 400 hours having their classroom skills judged against very high standards, NYSUT Vice President Maria Neira said in a statement.
Teacher candidates for national certification were required to provide teaching portfolios, student work samples and analyses of their teaching. They were judged on how well they know their subject area and how effectively they teach it.
“All of these talented teachers have shown a remarkable commitment to improving their practice and helping their students climb the ladder to college and career readiness,” State Education Commissioner John King said in a statement.
Teachers that received certification included about two-dozen from the Poughkeepsie area, a number from the Rochester area and others throughout the state. This year the number of teachers reaching the “gold standard” grew to 1,458.
