The state Electoral College convened at the Capitol Monday to officially cast their votes for President Barack Obama and Vice President Joseph Biden.
The 29 electors, who filled out their ballots in the ornate Senate chamber, included notable state Democrats such as Lt. Gov. Robert Duffy, Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver and Syracuse Mayor Stephanie Miner, who also serves as co-chair of the state Democratic Party.
Secretary of State Cesar Perales presided over the vote.
New York is one of several states where electors are not bound by law to cast their votes for the candidates who won the state’s popular vote on Election Day, Nov. 6.
They did so, however, unanimously voting for Obama and Biden. Electors and guests, including schoolchildren witnessing the historic event, applauded when when the vote counters announced the winners.
“This election confirmed that Americans wanted to see President Obama, in collaboration with Congress, lead this nation toward a new era of prosperity in the 21st century,” Duffy, who was elected president of the electoral college, said.
Also the former mayor of Rochester, Duffy said he was honored to join the likes of abolitionist Frederick Douglass and Kodak’s George Eastman, other Rochesterians who voted to elect presidents.
He said serving in the post as elector was an honor and privilege.
“It was just a wonderful day to be part of history,” he said.
