The Empire State Sports Foundation is launching a fundraising campaign to help bring back the Empire State Summer Games, Gannett’s Haley Viccaro reports.

Pro-hockey forward and Rochester native Stephen Gionta is aiding the launch of the “Fuel the Torch” campaign by urging alumni, athletes and supporters to help bring back the games.

“The Empire State Games are the premier amateur sporting event in New York State, and a source of pride for all New Yorkers,” Gionta said in a statement. “These games were one of the best experiences of my hockey career.”

The summer Empire State Games—now named after former Gov. Hugh Carey [1]—have been canceled in each of the past two years, and now organizers are trying to fund them through donations and corporate sponsorship to the newly launched Empire State Sports Foundation.

“Our goal is more than just bringing back the summer games,” said the foundation’s COO Scott Bell in a statement. “It’s our hope that we will be able to make certain that the games are better than ever, and around for the next generation of New Yorkers.”

Winter games are scheduled in Lake Placid on Feb. 7 through Feb. 10 and the summer games would be re-launched on July 24 to July 28 in the Rochester area.

Donations to the foundation can be made at www.empirestatesummergames.org [2].
