Former state Sen. Vincent Leibell had a really large house in Putnam County, then he went to the big house because of that large house. Now he’s in a halfway house, the Journal News reports.

[1]The former powerful Republican senator from Patterson has been moved to a halfway house in Brooklyn after serving 17 months in a federal prison for corruption charges, federal officials said.

He was moved Nov. 14 from the Federal Correctional Institution in Loretto, Pa., to a transitional housing facility operated through Community Corrections Office in Brooklyn, said Chris Burke, a Federal Bureau of Prisons spokesman.

“It is part of our pre-release procedure. It is not unusual,” he said, adding that Leibell could be eligible for home confinement before his final release date Jan. 19.

Leibell, a longtime state senator who was elected Putnam’s county executive as the federal investigation proceeded, pleaded guilty to two federal corruption charges in December 2010.

U.S. District Judge Warren Eginton sentenced him to 21 months in prison and three years’ probation. He arrived at the minimum security prison outside of Pittsburgh on July 13, 2011.

While in the halfway program, Leibell, 66, will be required to find and keep a job. It is unclear whether he is currently working.

The former Republican lawmaker admitted obstructing a grand jury probe into whether he had extorted money from lawyers doing work for Putnam County and to filing false tax returns.
