Republican George Amedore’s once 900-plus vote lead in a critical Senate seat was down to about 110 votes last night after Ulster County wrapped up its count of absentee and affidavit ballots.
Amedore’s lead over Democrat Cecilia Tkaczyk will now head to court. A court hearing is scheduled for Thursday.
In the other undeclared race, Democrat Terry Gipson held a roughly 1,700-vote lead over Republican incumbent Sen. Stephen Saland, R-Poughkeepsie. Democrats are accusing Republicans of slow playing the results . By yesterday afternoon, only 7 percent of the roughly 10,000 absentees had been counted.
As it stands, Republicans have secured 31 seats and Democrats 30—with the two undecided. Then, of course, there’s the matter of the Independent Democratic Conference.
Its leader, Sen. Jeff Klein, D-Bronx, told the New York Times yesterday the four members will side with Senate Republicans.
