Attorney General Eric Schneiderman said today his office will track the fundraising and spending of charities related to Superstorm Sandy, Gannett’s Haley Viccaro reports.
Schneiderman’s office said they sent requests to 75 nonprofit charities to obtain information about their fundraising related efforts in response to Sandy. The request for information is to ensure the funds for relief are used properly.
“In light of the importance of the recovery efforts, and the enormous amount of money raised in such a short period of time, it is critical that donors know where their money is going, and that funds are spent responsibly,” Schneiderman said in a statement.
In a press release from Schneiderman’s office, the letters sent to charities asks for the amount raised and spent for Sandy relief along with information about donations and services.
The charities’ responses will be posted on the Attorney General’s website to help organizations collaborate with delivering relief services. The website can be found at www.charitiesnys.com.
Some of the charities who were contacted include AARP, Habitat For Humanity, New York Cares, Occupy Sandy and the American Red Cross.
