Cuomo Says Special Session Is Not “Especially Likely”

Gov. Andrew Cuomo confirmed today what has widely been expected: A special session of the Legislature before year’s end is unlikely.

“I don’t think it’s looking especially probable,” Cuomo said.

[1]He added that with the attention on Superstorm Sandy recovery and the uncertainty over control of the state Senate [2], “I don’t think it’s especially likely, but if they want to talk I’m here.”

Cuomo said there are important issues on the table, such as whether to increase the minimum wage, have campaign-finance reform and decriminalize a small amount of marijuana. They were all issues that went unresolved before the legislative session ended last June.

“These are not short or easy conversations. These are complicated. We’ve tried to have them before and we didn’t reach agreement obviously,” Cuomo said on 1300-AM (WGDJ).

If lawmakers don’t come back, they won’t get a pay raise in January. They would have to approve it before year’s end.

Cuomo didn’t offer an opinion on who he would like to see control the state Senate as two undecided races will determine the majority in January. But Cuomo said all the political speculation about the Senate leadership should be kept at bay until the votes are counted.

“I would like to see a little less hyper-partisan rhetoric and a little more substantive rhetoric on issues and positions and what people would actually do,” Cuomo said.
