Oops, They Did It Again: Thruway Cancels Toll Hike Meeting

The state Thruway Authority again postponed a meeting to consider a major toll increase on trucks on the 570-mile thoroughfare.
The Authority’s website said the meeting scheduled for today at 11:30 a.m. in Albany has been postponed. No new date was announced, and no explanation was given for the delay.
It’s the second time in a week that a vote on a potential toll increase has been postponed. The authority was originally scheduled to meet Friday in Rockland County, but canceled just hours before the meeting.
The authority in May proposed a 45-percent toll increase on truck traffic. Truckers, business groups and lawmakers knocked the proposal, saying it would force trucks to take back roads and lead to higher costs for goods and services.
The authority told bond holders that the toll increase would go into effect by October. The Thruway Authority has increased tolls on all vehicles four times since 2005, and Comptroller Thomas DiNapoli has questioned the need for an additional hike, saying the agency look to curb its own costs.
