With Toll Hike Expected, Thruway Authority Postpones Meeting

Just as quietly as it was scheduled, the state Thruway Authority’s board has postponed its Friday meeting where it was expected to consider a toll increase in some form.

The Thruway board was scheduled to meet at 2:30 p.m. Friday in Suffern, Rockland County. Now, it’s set for Tuesday in Albany, according to the Thruway website [1].

The superhighway’s board first proposed a 45 percent toll increase on large trucks back in May, citing the need to increase its revenue in the face of rising costs and warnings from credit-rating agencies. It was supposed to be implemented by October, but the board’s Sept. 11 meeting was postponed and wasn’t rescheduled until this week.

Meanwhile, business groups have been consistently critical of the proposed increase and didn’t hold back this week after the Thruway scheduled its (now-postponed) meeting.

Brian Sampson, executive director of Unshackle Upstate, said Thursday [2] that the timing of the meeting was “shameful”—a Friday afternoon so close to Election Day and in the midst of the state cleaning up from Superstorm Sandy.

The Thruway Authority has not released an agenda for Tuesday’s meeting.
