Senator-Elect Simcha Felder Not Tipping His Hand

Simcha Felder, a senator-elect who may have a major impact on the balance of the state Senate, did little to tip his hand Friday, again repeating that he’s willing to sit with either Republicans or Democrats.
Felder, a registered Democrat from Brooklyn, easily defeated incumbent Sen. David Storobin, R-Brooklyn, at the polls on Tuesday. In a radio interview Friday, a noticeably hoarse Felder said he’s “willing to work with anyone who’s willing to work with me.”
“I don’t think the parties are any religion and I don’t believe in the parties,” Felder said on Talk1300AM (WGDJ) in Albany. “I believe in trying to represent the district that elected me and the interests of that district, whether they be Democrat, Republican or any other party, as long as it doesn’t compromise my ethical or moral values.”
Felder’s eventual decision could have a significant impact. Registered Democrats (including Felder) have clearly won 31 seats in the 63-seat chamber, while holding a significant lead in one other district. Another seat—the 46th Senate district race between Democrat Cecilia Tkaczyk and Republican George Amedore—is up in the air and will be decided by absentee ballots.
It takes 32 votes to pass a bill in the state Senate, making Felder a potential kingmaker. (Another four Democrats, known as the Independent Democratic Conference, have been an independent caucus and have also not tipped their 2013 plans.)
Felder said he doesn’t identify as either a strict Democrat or Republican.
“I’ve always considered myself a hybrid—fiscally conservative, but on social services, taking care of those in need and certainly those who can’t take care of themselves, I have felt that I am a liberal in that respect,” he said.
