New York State had a decrease of anti-Semitic incidents in 2011, according to statistics from the Anti-Defamation League, Gannett’s Haley Viccaro reports.

ADL’s audit reported 195 incidents in 2011, down from 205 in 2010.

“The decline of anti-Semitic incidents for the second straight year, however slight, is encouraging,” said ADL state chair John Harris in a statement. “However, Jews are still being targeted in significant numbers.”

New York is ranked second in the nation for the number of anti-Jewish incidents; California is first. In New York City’s five boroughs there were 127 incidents, compared to 133 in 2010.

Last year, Westchester and upstate New York had 20 reported anti-Semitic incidents and Long Island had 48 incidents, 43 of them in Nassau County.

The ADL audit for numbers nationwide reported a total of 1,080 incidents in 2011. Anti-Semitic incidents include physical assaults, harassment, threats and vandalism.

“The vast majority of Jewish New Yorkers enjoys a level of safety and freedom and takes pride in our diversity,” said ADL state director Ron Meier in a statement. “However, even in New York we are not immune to anti-Semitism.”
