Gov. Andrew Cuomo stressed the importance of voting Tuesday and asked those in the New York City area to be patient as polling places might be more hectic than usual in the wake of Superstorm Sandy.

[1]“Today is Election Day, and that is an important day and an important right for all of us,” he said at a Manhattan news conference Tuesday.

Cuomo explained an executive order he signed Monday, which allows those impacted by last week’s natural disaster to vote for president and statewide races by affidavit ballot in any polling place. They would not be able to vote for local races.

“This is so displaced people who maybe can’t get back to their origininal residence, their original polling place, can go to any polling place, sign a very simple affidavit and vote,” he said.

He asked for voters’ understanding of polling place issues.

“To the extent that there is more of a situation than usual in polling places, I think that it is understandable, and we’d ask the patience and tolerance of all New Yorkers,” he said.

“Many of the polling places were moved. Some of the polling places had issues with electricity and generators,” he continued. “But it is important that we vote. It’s important that the system works.

“This is an important election. This is a critical elction, I believe,” he said. “This country, this state has many important issues it’s facing and many important decisions to make. And who is in charge matters. So whatever your preference today, please vote, and please exercise your right.”
