A report today from NYPIRG found that Senate Republicans and their allies had $18 million in their campaign accounts to wage war in the final weeks of the campaign. Senate Democrats had $3.4 million.
The report by campaign-finance guru Bill Mahoney added up all the money Republican candidates, committees and former lawmakers had in their campaign accounts. It came to 5.3 times more than similar accounts for Senate Democrats.
It excludes housekeeping accounts, which can collect limitless amounts of cash on behalf of a party, so it doesn’t include the $1 million that New York City Mayor Michael Bloomberg gave recently.
And it doesn’t include outside PACs that will spend money on the races—like the one we reported on today.
Mahoney includes an interesting category: “Ex-Legislators Currently In Prison.” That category includes $417,310 for Senate Democrats and -$173,188 for Senate Republicans.
