Gov. Andrew Cuomo said Monday that there are no immediate plans for a decision on whether to allow hydraulic fracturing in New York and that he expects lawsuits to follow the decision either way.
The state Department of Environmental Conservation is expected to issue a final determination on whether high-volume hydrofracking—a natural-gas extraction technique that involves a mix of water, sand and chemicals injected into gas-rich shale formations—can be done safely. There has been much speculation over when the decision would be announced.
During an interview on an Albany radio station Monday morning, Cuomo said he isn’t going to pressure the state agency into making the decision by a certain date, such as the upcoming election day for the office of the president and the state Legislature or by the end of the year.
“When it’s done, and when they’re prepared — that’s when we’ll announce the decision,” he told WDJG.
“And, remember, the announcing of the decision is not going to be the conclusion,” he continued. “I promise you, there will be lawsuits, whatever the decision is. So the day right after the decision, there will be another press conference that says, now we’re going to step two, which is a series of legal challenges and political challenges, and we’re going to try to get federal legislation and state legislation.
“It’s going to be an ongoing situation for a long, long time,” he said.

No Pressure: Tell that to the farmers under forclosure, the gentleman rancher losing his ranch because he lost his job. Yell it to the widow who buried her husband 3 years into the wait, No Pressure!!! are you kidding what a selesh thing to say it’s as if landowners dont even exist in Albany…. at least not until property taxes are due. Release it Governor or tell you staff to quit telling people its on your desk ready to go.
Well, the proof of fracking and it’s destruction was in the problems in greely CO last week in the New york times stated farmers cant farm without water and the frackers are stealinf the water from all of the farmers as well as taking them from FIRE HYDRANTS WHAT ARE YOU GOING TO USE WHEN YOU HAVE A FIRE? Fracking is total wanton destruction for an absolute Corrupt and greedy few who will profit and NOT THE LEASE SIGNER! JUST LOOK AT DIMOCK< HICKORY PA, GREELY CO, TALK TO RON GULLA ! ANY ONE WHO SUPPORTS DRILLING AFTER SEEING THESE HORRIFIC DESTRUCTION ARE TRULLY CORRUPT ! CRIMINALIZE FRACKING NOW!
Fracking is so dangerous for our air and water, not to mention the possible / probable earthquakes that it causes. We MUST put the money into wind and solar and other sustainable methods.
Call Cuomo’s office EVERY DAY at 866-961-3208 and urge him strongly to BAN FRACKING in all of NY State! What a hero he would become in the US and around the world!
They are already beginning to build the Spectra Pipeline under the Hudson River ending in the West Village of Manhattan!!! You can imagine what an accident under the Hudson or in Manhattan would cause in terms of lives and detriment to the environment!
But the fracking companies continue to say they are safe!!! Ha!
There never was any doubt that less than a complete statewide ban was implemented, disaster for New York would follow. Certainly our PA neighbor long since dispelled any possible compromise on that score. Given the enormous resources and endless willingness of the energy boys to obfuscate, minimize and out and out lie, it really is three cheers for the governor! On to the next round.
I saw an advertsement on telivsion That was asking me to look for the California Lables for dairy products to be sold in NY. SO what is California doing right and NYS is not doing right. California prospeers while NY struggles. Fix the problem. If NYS needs energy does anyone in Albany realize that a 50 acre park built in NY is a profit making business? One beauty of Solar Power is if something has to get fixed you walk up to it. With fracking if there’s a problem it’s a poisonous mess. Let’s make energy and money for NY’ers and not foreign investors who will care more about profits and not our environment
you say there is danger you have yet to
PROVE IT
your say so does not make it so
There will be HELL to pay if we don’t move away from fossil fuels ASAP. Methane, aka natural gas is a fossil fuel and a potent heat trapping gas. Lease your land to solar farms, you, we, we will all be much better off. Fracking is a poison pill. Do not swallow it.
