Sen. Steve Saland, R-Poughkeepsie, today received a “Katie’s Hero” award at the National Conference of State Legislatures Legislative Summit for his work this year in getting an expansion of the DNA database in New York.
Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver was also honored. Silver received the William M. Bulger Excellence in State Leadership Award; the award was announced last month.
Kidnapping victim Elizabeth Smart and the non-profit organization “DNA Saves” presented Saland with the award, according to a news release from his office.
The DNA database will be expanded to include all felonies and most misdemeanor arrests.
“It’s truly humbling to be honored by such a courageous individual and recognized advocate like Elizabeth Smart,” said Saland said in a statement.
Saland said the new law was expanded in recent years to include 36 misdemeanors that require DNA samples.
