Add the state Democratic Party to another arm Gov. Andrew Cuomo can swing in support of his austerity budget plan.
Party Chairman Jay Jacobs and Executive Director Charlie King (Cuomo’s lieutenant governor pick in 2002) released a statement today backing the governor’s budget:
“The Democratic Party will be organizing support all across the state to join Governor Cuomo’s citizen crusade. The Governor is right when he says he needs the people’s voice to ring strong and true. Only the power of the people will defeat the special interests.”
The party plans a series of organizing events around the state in support of the budget, which calls for deep cuts in health care and education spending—not exactly traditional Democratic goals.
King and Jacobs urged supporters to sign up at www.newny.budget.com, but as of 2 p.m. today, the link was not working.
The statement comes on the heels of the state Independence Party reiterating its support for Cuomo. And Conservative Party Chairman Michael Long—who backed Republican Carl Paladino in the November election after pulling support for Rick Lazio—says Cuomo is on the right track fiscally as well.
