Coalition pushes for closing tax loopholes, soda tax
A coalition of groups and legislators called themselves the Better Choice Budget Campaign launched a statewide television ad campaign today that calls on Wall Street and big business to help solve the state’s budget crisis.
New York is seven days into the 2010-11 fiscal year and does not have a budget. Lawmakers, who returned to the Capitol today after their Passover/Easter break, and Gov. David Paterson have to resolve a $9.2 billion budget deficit.
The coalition supports a number of revenue-raising/cost-savings options, including closing corporate tax loopholes, enacting the unpopular soda tax proposed by the governor and adding another high-income tax bracket on the state income tax.
Among the coalition members are New Yorkers for Fiscal Fairness, Environmental Advocates of New York, Empire Justice Center, Hunger Action Network, Coalition for the Homeless and the Fiscal Policy Institute.
