Former Senate Majority Leader Joseph Bruno has emptied in campaign coffers for his legal defense, spending $742,000 over the past six months on attorneys in his federal corruption trial, campaign finance records show.
NYPIRG said Bruno has burned through nearly $1.3 million in his campaign account since he left office in mid-2008. The most over the last six months went to his high-powered Washington D.C. law firm of McDermott Will & Emery.
His campaign account is now negative $1,044.14. His supporters have started a legal defense fund for him.
Bruno was convicted in December on two counts and faces sentencing in March. His lawyers yesterday filed paperwork to have the convictions overturned.
