Sean Coffey, a former federal prosecutor who lives in Bronxville, Westchester County, said he’s raised about $1.65 million for his potential run for attorney general, the latest Democrat to report more than $1 million in the bank for the likely race.
Coffey left his Manhattan law firm in October to explore a run for attorney general as most expect Attorney General Andrew Cuomo will run for governor.
Coffey put out a letter to supporters today saying that he raised $1.5 million in the last six weeks.
The money has been rolling in for potential Democratic candidates for the seat. Nassau County District Attorney Kathleen Rice reported having $2.4 million on hand, $1.75 million for Eric Dinallo, the former state Insurance Department superintendent, and $1.3 million for Assemblyman Richard Brodsky, D-Greenburgh, Westchester County.
Sen. Jeff Klein, D-Bronx, another potential candidate, said he will file with about $1.3 million, and Sen. Eric Schneiderman, D-Manhattan is expected to have more than $900,000.
Here’s Coffey’s email today.
Dear Friend,
Just a few weeks ago, this campaign started with no staff, no phones, and a candidate (me) who had never before run for office. Your inspiring support sure did change things.
Since our first organizational meeting the week before Thanksgiving, we have put together a first rate team, built an enthusiastic and growing corps of supporters, and even signed a lease for our new campaign office. And while we were figuring out where to put the phones and furniture, you helped us go from zero dollars to over $1.65 million – including over $1.5 million in just the past six weeks.
Because of you our financial filing this Friday will vastly exceed expectations for a non-politician who was practicing law full-time just a few short weeks ago. No doubt I am benefiting from the growing belief that New Yorkers want a new, tough, and independent voice to tackle the systemic problems in Albany and to make sure people play by the rules on Wall Street. With your support, I intend to be that advocate, and to validate your faith in me.
Thank you again for your extraordinary support,
Sean
