Michelle Obama not the only Michelle in politics

At the inauguration of President-elect Barack Obama later this month, when someone calls out for “Michelle’’ around New York visitors to the event, there could be confusion. That’s because not only is that the name of the country’s new First Lady, but also of New York’s first Lady and the wife of new Senate Majority Leader Malcolm Smith, D-Queens. Smith, who was sworn in this week as the first Democratic leader of the state Senate in 43 years, teared up during the ceremony when he introduced his Michelle, who was seated a few feet away, describing how hard life can be for the spouse of a politician, who is home less than most people.
