Klein: I’m Voting for Malcolm Smith

November
3

Despite talk to the contrary, Sen. Jeff Klein, D- Bronx, said this morning that he plan to vote for Malcolm Smith to lead the Democratic conference—whether it’s in the majority or the minority.

“I never asked anybody to vote for me for leader. I intend to go back to Albany on Wednesday in the majority and vote for Malcolm Smtih for majority leader,” he said.

And he said he’d do the same in January, if Democrats take the majority.

“I have every intention, and hopefully I’ll have the opportunity to nominate Malcolm Smith for majority leader,” Klein continued. “And I’m looking forward to being the deputy majority leader.”

Klein said the main reason for Wednesday’s meeting of the Democratic conference in Albany on Wednesday is to formulate proposed cuts to the state budget, which are due to Governor Paterson on Friday.

Yet Klein said he’d just as soon see a vote of confidence for Smith as well.

“I hope there is, so we can get the politics behind us and move forward and start to change things,” he said. “If we take the vote and we make Malcolm the majority leader, I think that would be a good thing do to on Wednesday.”
